Village with hilly and flat land

Nijemirdum was originally an agricultural village. Its surroundings are extremely varied, very flat land to the south, raised cultivated land to the west and meadows divided up by wooded banks and woods to the north and east.

Visible from a distance is the medieval tower with a truncated pyramid-shaped roof. The tower is all that remains of the church which was built in the 14th century and stood there until 1833.

In addition to the tower there is also a historical cemetery with a number of war graves of British and Canadian pilots killed during Second World War.

The tower also played a nautical role. For those sailing on the Zuiderzee it used to act as a beacon.

Polder mill

Surrounded by paddocks the eight-sided polder mill, ‘t Swaantje, a so-called monk’s mill dating from 1893, is an eye-catching spectacle. The original mill on that site was built in 1790 but was destroyed by fire. The present mill was built on a smaller scale. ‘t Swaantje was formerly used to drain the Hoitebuurster Polder. At a later stage diesel-driven pumping stations replaced the use of wind power.
